Looth Tooth

Michael, the illustrious seventh and youngest son in our family, is working on losing his second tooth in a week. He is already seven years old, so these teeth are hanging on for dear life from my remembered experience. The first one went a few days ago, after almost 2 months of Mike trying to keep it in his head. It was barely hanging on when Fred reached into his mouth, and yet he let out the most blood curdling scream I have ever heard at the loss of a tooth.

Which of course is no small number in our house. If I guesstimate correctly its 20 teeth per child ( plus the one Andy lost to a ram- but that's a story for a different time)  which brings the total up to almost 120 thus far. And we haven't even begun on the little girls.

Yes, the tooth fairy is a regular at our place. In fact we've made up a little bed for her and usually leave a few snacks ( sugary snacks! heehee!). Some of the kids have almost caught her, but you all know how tricky she is. I also had a child try to fake her out by leaving not a tooth, but a small white pebble that looked remarkably like a tooth. We were clear he was NOT to do that again and risk angering her, lest he ruin the chances for good little children to get some reward for their actual teeth.

Don't Pack Away Christmas with the Tree

I know today is the Epiphany of the Lord which marks the arrival of the kings or wise men to adore Christ. It is also 'the end' of the Christmas season ( Fred will correct me and say technically the baptism of the Lord is the end but you get my meaning). We all kind of know that its about time when the tree branches start to turn brown, and the parties come to an end, and the need to get back to work and school is there, and the weather tells us to buck up.

So we put away the decorations and the ornaments and the wreaths and we take down lights and other symbols of the season as we prepare for the cold long days ahead. But REMEMBER Christmas isn't a decoration,or a wreath,or a package, or a day - and if you're anything like me you probably need Christmas the whole year through. So this year don't pack away Christmas in the boxes, keep it in your heart. And every once in a while when you're a little blue or just plain 'ole reflective, take it out and look it over and remember the love. Christmas isn't in the boxes, Christmas is in you- if only you'll let him be!

And they heard him exclaim ere he drove out of sight-
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Cribs and Curve-balls

Lo Lo has a new little bed. We took down her crib today after talking about it all week. She has been climbing out of it for a while now and I didn't want her hurting herself, so down it came. It will likely take some time before she adjusts to the change. This is the first time our house has been cribless since Andrew was born. I know, all you good parents are out there thinking "wow, first time in 18 years- that must be a memorable day!" and you're right. But there was something more to the week then just the crib.

Peter also has a new-girl-friend. I don't want to put down a new 'girlfriend' ( note the subtle difference in spacing) because that would imply something I am clearly not ready for. It really struck me when he updated his facebook status.Actually, it was a giant curve-ball. He has liked other girls before, and they have even liked him back, but something is different here. I can see he is growing up ( you'd think that might have hit me when he actually grew taller than I am, but mothers are notoriously slow learners). I also think he is very young and doesn't need to be thinking too hard about relationships at this point in his life, but my thoughts are not likely to stop his thoughts from taking place.

I found myself struggling with the whole idea of how to handle this well. I tend to be very opinionated and even a bit strong at times. I don't fancy that is going to be the best way of moving forward.Gentle guidance will have to rule the day. I am not worried about how he will handle himself or if his value system will hold up in all the right places. And that is not because I don't know he is human or I think him above all that, but simply because I am certain he is human and not above all that- and have spent the last 16 years of his life trying to impact him with that reality to which he happily seems to be catching on (and it probably doesn't hurt that I am slipping Andy and JP money on the sly to keep an extra close eye on their brother when they're out)

In every way I enjoy Peter. He is funny, and kind, thoughtful, and good-natured. He spends loads of time with us and loves his younger brothers and sisters to pieces. He is such a pleasant human being. I've grown so accustomed to him. And somehow in the last week between school work, and housework, packing away Christmas decorations, and a simple facebook status update; I feel like he took one step further away from us. Yes, just a small step, but significant none the less. And I see it unfolding over time and what will come next- and a path appears on the horizon that I always knew would, but just didn't expect so soon.
Andy, John-Paul, Peter

The days that come at us powerfully  like this one, are never really ones we can prepare for. We think on them, and pray on them, and hope they will go well; but when they arrive we are in the midst of life and work and taking down baby cribs- and  they sneak into our world a new  reality that tells us time has been passing. And it has. And the little feet thumping down the halls are not the ones we imagine them to be. My heart might remember those footsteps as Andy's or Pete's but my eyes see big brothers scooping up their baby sisters in arms far too large to belong to mere boys. Memories so powerful they trap me in time and hold me there to love a little boy no matter if he is playing with his trucks, learning to ride a bike, or even shaving.
Andy and Pete

While there is still plenty of time for Pete and his brothers to search their way through the minefield of love, and while I highly doubt this will be a long lasting relationship, it is still the start of something slightly new around here. And I think it might take me a while to get used to it. Maybe, even longer than it takes for Lo-Lo to get used to her new bed.

Running

I haven't done a Health and Fitness post recently so here goes. I got through the holidays pretty well. I never gave up exercise completely ( though I got a bit spotty for a few days). I ate too much. There I said it.

I don't know if I gained anything since I am avoiding the scale presently. I have since reformed my ways, as has Fred. In fact We both are finishing up our first full week of diet and exercise once again. I feel good about that. Fred has set out lofty goals for himself, I am just making a point of being healthy.

I am also stoked that I have this awesome tread mill in my basement! I have run 5 days in a row on it and it is wonderful! I never have an excuse now to skip. I don't have to worry about what I am wearing, or asking the older boys to watch the kids while I go work out, or traipsing around in the cold! It is miraculous.

I have to be honest here and tell you that I really grew tired of the rich food pretty quickly. I enjoy celebrating and having fun, but it also just doesn't agree with me after a short while.I like salad. I don't find eating healthy a punishment ( though I can see why you could feel that way) So, there it all is. Thanks for keeping me accountable!

Third Quarter

Boy- do I despise third quarter. First quarter is great, second quarter I have Christmas to look forward to and fourth quarter we are sliding into home base. Third quarter is difficult because:

  • Its hard to get the momentum back up once you've had a few weeks off
  • It is cold
  • It is the hardest of the work because by this point you already have figured out the problem areas and are now focusing in on them
  • The kids are reluctant
  • They also cannot go outside to play at the end of the school day and so tend to bicker
  • The TV and computer get too much use.
  • It interrupts ski season
  • It makes me grumpy
I know it it still the same number of weeks as the other quarters, but it feels like it is twice the length. I simply muddle through third quarter each year. Does everyone feel this way, or it is just me? As soon as the fourth quarter comes around I am happy again. I feel lighter. It is just around the corner isn't it? Only seven more weeks after this one!
